The genre of “stoner comedy” has become so widely recognized that it’s practically a household term. During the past 20 years, few films in this genre have achieved the same level of fame as 2008’s Pineapple Express. The film’s titular strain of cannabis, once just a fictional creation, was brought to life after G13 Labs renamed one of their existing strains in honor of the movie. Intrigued by this classic strain, I recently picked up at Sunnyside Champaign a sample of Pineapple Express by Cresco to see how well it lived up to the name.
Pineapple Express is a hybrid cross between Trainwreck and Haiwaiian. This batch of flower tested at 1.13% THC, 27.14% THCa, and 28.27% total cannabinoids.
Inside the jar, three large thumb-sized colas were uniformly bright turf green with orange hairs crisscrossing the surface. The trichome frost was milky and just starting the transition from white to amber. Squeezing a bud between my fingers provided a slow bounceback and left some stickiness on my fingertips.
The unique sour chemical tang of terpinolene dominated the top of the Pineapple Express aroma profile. Pineapple, grapefruit, diesel, and freshly ground mustard notes gave the scent even more of a sour character. The flavor was much more earthy than the sour aroma indicated with flavors of freshly turned soil and roasted almonds making up the inhale and a sweet unripe pineapple flavor creating a sweet finish.
It took some time for the effects of Pineapple Express to fully set in. As a wave of body heaviness and a tight headband of pressure around my skull washed over me, I began to feel more relaxed while still maintaining my energy levels. Pineapple Express was particularly effective at helping me let go of my stresses and focus on the present moment.
Its calming properties also lent themselves well to creative pursuits, although I did find myself occasionally getting “locked in” on a problem, which slowed my workflow. All in all, Pineapple Express proved to be a solid “jack of all trades” hybrid. For more Illinois News Joint reviews, visit here.
