Plant-derived products have been used in the cosmetics industry for a very long time. Oils or extracts are one of the main ingredients in creams, lotions and gels of plant origin. Recently, consumers pay more and more attention to the composition of the cosmetics they use. No wonder, after all, natural preparations are not only effective, but also gentle on the skin, even the very sensitive one.
A relatively new substance in cosmetics is CBD, which comes from hemp flowers. Hemp cosmetics are recommended for virtually all skin types. More and more people reach for ready-made cosmetics, while others decide on pure oils with a high concentration of CBD, which can be used for body, face or hair care.
What hemp raw materials are used in cosmetics and what cosmetics can be made of them?
Welcome to the article.
Hemp raw materials have great potential for use in cosmetic products.
Hemp is a plant that can be easily processed into extracts that are a base or additive for hemp balms, hemp gels, hemp soaps, and hemp ointments.
Most cosmetics with CBD are based on natural plant ingredients, which are a huge treasury of vitamins and minerals, as well as fatty acids.
Properly processed hemp raw materials can be an ideal addition to cosmetics that will enrich their natural properties.
An unquestionable advantage of using such cosmetics is the fact that hemp oil, unlike other oils, does not leave an oily, unpleasant layer on the skin surface.
Hemp raw materials in cosmetics can occur in various forms. Today we will take a closer look at some of the most popular ones.
Hemp extract
Hemp extract is nothing more than an extract of hemp flowers or seeds used in herbal medicine and cosmetics. Hemp extract is the basic component of hemp oil, which contains a high content of CBD and other substances such as flavonoids or hemp terpenes, but does not contain THC. On the basis of such an extract and CBD oil, both dietary supplements and many cosmetics, such as hemp gels, hemp balms and even hemp ointments, are produced and manufactured.
Hemp extract can also be the basis for many food products, such as hemp oil, flour, or even hemp sweets. Hemp extract in the form of oil is produced in two ways.
Hemp seed oil consists in cold pressing the seeds, while flower oil is obtained by extracting the flower panicles by various methods, e.g. extraction with CO2 or with alcohol.
At Alba Hemp we have a wide selection of CBD hemp oils with different concentrations ranging from 3% – 30%. Our hemp extract is produced by supercritical CO2 extraction. In this way, hemp oil is microbiologically clean.
The oil is unrefined, i.e. it does not contain any impurities, chemical ingredients or artificial dyes.
It has a dark green color and has a thick consistency due to the wax content. During the production of cosmetics, such oil is purified, which changes the color to golden-green, and the consistency becomes more fluid.
Hemp hydrolate
Until recently, hydrolates had no specific use in cosmetics. Currently, this trend is changing day by day, because hydrosols are more delicate than oils and have a pH close to the natural pH of human skin.
Hemp hydrolate is a product obtained by steam distillation of whole plants or only their parts.
For a better understanding, let’s explain what the distillation process is. Distillation consists in separating a multi-component mixture from hemp by evaporating and condensing these components. This process is primarily used to isolate one or more compounds found in a plant.
The final components of distillation are essential oil and distilled water. The distillation process produces water, i.e. our hydrolate, into which dissolved plant particles and small amounts of essential oil have penetrated.
Therefore, hydrolate is nothing more than a plant essence, only in a much milder form than oils. Hemp hydrolates can be used, for example, directly on the skin as a tonic, as a foundation for cream or mask. They can also be used as a water phase for the production of natural cosmetics containing hemp.
CBD isolate
CBD isolate is the purest form of this cannabinoid available, which is in the form of a crystal and is the maximum concentrated, pure form of CBD.
This means that the isolate does not use the properties of other compounds contained in hemp, such as flavonoids or terpenes.
The isolate is in the form of crystals that can be used in the production of cosmetics based on pure CBD. The isolate can be a component of e.g. hemp soap or hemp ointments.
Although there are currently many cosmetics on the market that contain the cannabinoid CBD, it is worth paying attention to the composition of such cosmetics.
For a cosmetic to be considered natural, it must contain at least 95% of ingredients of natural origin or organic farming.
The higher the content of the hemp ingredient, the higher the care value of the cosmetic.
