I must have heard a millions times some form of the phrase, “He’s just an old stoner.” Those outside the cannabis community have used the phrase to belittle. Those in the community have used the phrase to endear. Well, in Illinois, the phrase might fit more than expected.
According to a recent report from Headset, a data platform for the cannabis economy, Illinois has a higher representation from Baby Boomer and Gen X generations than other states. Headset’s recently released report examined the Illinois cannabis market, stating, “This report analyzes detailed data on thousands of products in the Illinois market to determine how it compares to other states. Key areas of focus include sales growth, product category popularity, pricing, basket analysis, and demographics.”
According to the report, “While Millennials make up 45% of total sales, there is a higher Baby Boomer and Gen X representation in the Illinois market. Consumers over the age of 41 typically account for 36.4% of sales, however, in Illinois they capture 42.1% of total sales. There is also a slight skew towards women compared to the national market.”
Headset’s graph compares “the proportion of total market sales in Illinois by demographic group to the proportion of sales attributed to the demographic group nationally. If the index for a demographic group is greater than 100, then that group spends relatively more in Illinois than they do in the rest of the US. If the index is lower than 100, then that group spends relatively less in Illinois than they do in the rest of the country.”
The graph also shows that Baby Boomers account for 15.3% of the total market sales in Illinois, while Generation Z accounts for only 13.5%. Generation X accounts for 25.9% of the total market sales. Women account for roughly half of the total market sales compared to men. For more Illinois cannabis industry news, visit here.
