Every year, we at Illinois News Joint purposely try to expand on several aspects of our coverage, and in 2023, we have decided to direct more attention toward advocating for the needs, rights, and betterment of medical cannabis cardholders in Illinois. To help facilitate this endeavor, we have partnered with Modern Compassionate Care. The collaboration will allow us to combine our resources to better inform the public about issues and concerns Illinois medical patients have with the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program Act and Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act.
Modern Compassionate Care is an integrative wellness clinic founded by Katie Sullivan, a nurse practitioner, and Beth Lupo, a therapist. Sullivan and Lupo are passionate about approaching health from a holistic, mind-body-spirit perspective. With a philosophy rooted in trauma-informed care, they believe in client-led healing and strive to truly listen and collaborate with patients to create individualized treatment plans that meet unique needs and lifestyles.
“Beth and I started Modern Compassionate Care in 2021 with the goal of bringing a holistic approach to medical cannabis care and offering patients a place to come for treatment guidance and support that went beyond just providing medical card evaluations,” Sullivan said. “We work with patients of all ages with a wide variety of conditions. One of our main goals is to increase the accessibility and affordability of medical cannabis as a treatment.”
Modern Compassionate Care offers in-office visits or telehealth consultations (certifications in Illinois; consultations nation-wide) and discounted certification rates for seniors 62 and older, low-income patients, Veterans, cannabis industry employees, and Illinois News Joint readers and followers. Modern Compassionate Care also offers a longer cannabis consultation for patients who want more specific treatment guidance, product recommendations, and more detailed patient education about the therapeutic use of the plant. This option caters toward people who are new to cannabis, parents of pediatric medical patients, and people with severe chronic or complex conditions.
Those unsure if they qualify for a medical card or just want some basic information can always book a free 15-minute consultation to ask questions before scheduling an actual appointment. Book an appointment here. People can select a time and choose an office visit or virtual appointment.
“We certify all patients at the time of the appointment and provide instructions for the patients to complete their part of the state system,” Sullivan said. “Most patients receive their provisional medical card by the day after they complete the state application process. If someone does not qualify, we do not charge an appointment fee.”
In 2022, Modern Compassionate Care added mental health counseling and ketamine assisted psychotherapy to its clinic offerings to support the needs of our patients further. Free 15-minute consultation appointments are available for those services as well.
“Our main objective is to make alternative treatment options like cannabis more approachable for people,” Sullivan said. “We are really glad to be able to offer a stigma-free environment for people to seek information and access this type of integrative care affordably.”
