I still get excited when I spot new cultivars on dispensary menus. As someone who tries a variety of strains, I’m always chasing new and unique flavors and experiences, and a new strain is just another chance to explore. Crops, the label from Justice Cannabis Co., recently dropped the new Orange Malt, so I headed up to Consume Marion and picked up a sample.
Oranger Malt is a hybrid cross of Mimosa and Ice Cream Cake. This batch of flower tested at 0.13% CBG, 1.18% CBGa, 0.44% Delta-9-THC, 26.67% THCa, and 28.42% total cannabinoids. Terpenes were 2.8% of the total weight with β-caryophyllene, limonene, ocimene, β-myrcene, and α-humulene being the heaviest.
The glass jar held two buds, one a large cola top, and a smaller chunky sidekick flower. Deep-royal purple and varying shades of bright green shone under a thick visibly milky trichome frost. These flowers were gently trimmed, leaving a small sugar leaf presence at the surface, and overall gentle handling had resulted in a better flower in the jar.
The scent was a tangy blend of orange peel, sweet heavy cream, and black pepper alongside less direct notes of lime and basil. The creamy orange flavor took over the top end of the palate evoking a dreamsicle, before things took a turn towards the savory as the black pepper notes and herbal basil came in on the finish.
Orange Malt was heavier than I anticipated, inducing a fast acting relaxation and mood lift that left me feeling peaceful, while putting a smile on my face. My mindscape was wide open, and my awareness improved, making me more distractible by outside sources. Orange Malt’s combination of calmed relaxation but improved mood made it a good fit for any time of day, even if the high made me less task oriented.
Overall, the interesting creamy citrus flavor and mood boosting effects made this a strain I’ll be looking for more of. For more Illinois News Joint reviews, visit here.
