Thursday’s Throwback to Hemp in America–How’d it Get to America
The first traces of hemp were found in 8000 B.C. in regions of Asia. As history moved on, hemp continued to spread to other countries and other civilizations. These countries included other areas in Asia, Europe, Africa and finally to South America. In 1606, hemp was introduced to North America. Since that time, farmers have planted and harvested hemp vigorously whenever it was legal. Subsequently, they also produced paper, fabric, lamp fuels, rope and canvases from hemp.
Throughout the generations of the lifetime of hemp, it occupied a large part of Americans everyday life. It has always been durable and versatile besides contributing to environmental sustainability. Many important people including politicians like George Washington grew hemp on their plantations. In 1916, USDA published an article stating that hemp produces four times more per acre than trees. This was a reason to utilize hemp for paper rather than trees. Popular Mechanics published findings that there were 25,000 different products that could be made from hemp. Henry Ford, the famous car maker, claimed that hemp was stronger than steel and built a hemp car to prove his point in 1942.

Thursday’s Throwback to Hemp in America — When Hemp Crop Was Mandated
100 years later after its advent into North America, farmers were mandated to grow hemp and not only that but told the amount they must plant a certain amount of hemp and give it back to the government. In 1942, the USDA initiated the “Hemp for Victory” program that gave a green light to planting hemp. This led to the planting of over 150,000 acres of the hemp plant. This brought prosperity to the agricultural business as well as good news for the manufacturer and consumer alike. Hemp was also mandated or allowed during the Civil war because it was needed for manufacturing garments, canvas, rope and many other things used to fight the war. In 1957, the last hemp crop was planted in Wisconsin before the Controlled Substance Act was passed.

Thursday’s Throwback to Hemp in America — Hemp Outlawed
In 1970, the Controlled Substance Act was passed, and it changed everything for hemp farmers and manufacturers as well as the hemp consumer. This Act classified hemp as an illegal Schedule 1 drug which triggered strict regulations on growing industrial hemp. They also threw in marijuana as having the same standing which is false. Drug regulators and law makers just could not separate the two different branches of cannabis. It was easier to make the entire plant illegal. Even though it was illegal for Americans to grow and use hemp, the U.S. government began importing hemp seeds and hemp oil from other countries in 1998. Consequently, in 2004 the Ninth Circuit Court in the case of Hemp Industries Association vs DEA protected the sales of hemp products being imported.
Because of this lack of understanding what hemp was, it spent most of its life in “jail”. It was more than frustrating to so many because even though it was illegal, some managed to use it on an experimental basis and discovered its benefits. That is why when it was fully liberated, it took off like wildfire.

Thursday’s Throwback to Hemp in America — Hemp Liberated
For whatever reason, hemp licenses to grow the plant were issued to two North Dakota farmers in 2007. The next big landmark even for hemp was in 2014 when President Obama signed a Farm Bill that allowed research institutions to start pilot programs of hemp farming. This allowed research to begin so that when hemp was fully liberated, farmers, researchers and scientist would be ready to hit the road running. The Industrial Hemp Farming Act was put forth in 2015 in an effort to again legalize hemp but to no avail.
Finally, in 2018, President Trump signed into law the 2018 Farm Bill on December 2018. Now hemp is liberated after decades of withholding a viable benefit to humanity from the American people. This bill was in the form an amendment that legalized hemp and all parts of it including all the different cannabinoids, terpenes and seeds. The only exception was that the cannabinoid, Delta 9 THC, could only be in levels of 0.3% or lower.
What Happened Next
The liberation of hemp in 2018 pumped new life into the agricultural sector. Farmer immediately started adapting their farms to incorporate the planting and harvesting of hemp. Tobacco farmers in particular were attracted to the hemp factor because their crop was in a slide downward in recent years. Hemp fit right into the methods of tobacco farmers, so the switch was relatively minimal. There was enough research already completed so the researchers could get a supply of hemp seeds to the farmers relatively quickly. The demand was already present so just like that, vendors started opening up shops to get the hemp products to the consumer. Health ensued for multitudes, so much so that the medical world started doing clinicals and eventually used it to make a drug as an anti-seizure medication for children. Giving a toast to hemp now and in the future.
